Patsy Fagan, Ph.D. - First and foremost a mathematics educator!

Mathematics Educator
My teaching career began as a high school mathematics teacher at Fredericktown High School in Fredericktown, Ohio. During those early years I completed my MA in Mathematics Education at the Ohio State University.

After nine years I moved to Des Moines, Iowa and taught one year at Iowa State University as a temporary instructor in the Mathematics Department and as a part-time instructor at Drake University. I have continued to teach full-time in the Mathematics/Computer Science department at Drake University. My teaching assignments have ranged from intermediate algebra to Calculus I.

In 1991 I received my Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instructional Technology at Iowa State University with an emphasis on mathematics education. Since then I have been the primary instructor for mathematics content courses for education majors taught from the Math/CS department in collaboration with the School of Education.

Workshop Leader
In the early 1990s I found an interest and skill in event organizing and organization leadership. Since then I have served as conference coordinator for state-wide and multi-state regional conferences for NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) and served as chair of the NCTM Conferences and Conventions committee and as President of the ICTM (Iowa Council of Teachers of Mathematics and other state organizations. Additionally I consult with and conduct workshops in school districts across the state. The emphasis of many of workshops is on teaching mathematics effectively with the appropriate use of manipulatives and technology.

A balance in my life is my volunteer work. My volunteer activities range from organizing a dinner for 900 at my church to working as a walking scorer for the Allianz Champions Golf Tournament. A majority of my volunteer effort is directed through the Capital Striders Running Club in Des Moines. I have served on the Board of Directors, co-directed two annual races, as chair for a race directors seminar, served as editor of the club’s newsletter, Strider News.
